This invention relates to an end effector device for grasping and maneuvering objects such as berthing handles of a space telescope. The device includes a V-shaped capture window defined as inclined surfaces in parallel face plates which converge toward a retainer recess in which the handle is retained. A pivotal finger (30) meshes with a pair of pivoted fingers which rotate in counterrotation. The fingers rotate to pull a handle within the capture window into recess where latches lock handle in the recess. To align the capture window, plates may be cocked plus or minus five degrees on base. Drive means is included in the form of a motor coupled with a harmonic drive speed reducer, which provides for slow movement of the fingers at a high torque so that large articles may be handled. Novelty of the invention is believed to reside in the combined intermeshing finger structure, drive means and the harmonic drive speed reducer, which features provide the required maneuverability and strength

A study of symmetry breaking in a relativistic Bose gas using the contraction algorithm

A relativistic Bose gas at finite density suffers from a sign problem that makes direct numerical simulations not feasible. One possible solution to the sign problem is to re-express the path integral in terms of Lefschetz thimbles. Using this approach we study the relativistic Bose gas both in the symmetric phase (low-density) and the spontaneously broken phase (high-density). In the high-density phase we break explicitly the symmetry and determine the dependence of the order parameter on the breaking. We study the relative contributions of the dominant and sub-dominant thimbles in this phase. We find that the sub-dominant thimble only contributes substantially when the explicit symmetry breaking is small, a regime that is dominated by finite volume effects. In the regime relevant for the thermodynamic limit, this contribution is negligible.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

A New Brown Dwarf Desert? A Scarcity of Wide Ultracool Binaries

We present the results of a deep-imaging search for wide companions to low-mass stars and brown dwarfs using NSFCam on IRTF. We searched a sample of 132 M7-L8 dwarfs to magnitude limits of J∼20.5J \sim 20.5 and K∼18.5K \sim 18.5, corresponding to secondary-primary mass ratios of ∼0.5\sim 0.5. No companions were found with separations between 2{\arcsec} to 31{\arcsec} (∼\sim40 AU to ∼\sim1000 AU). This null result implies a wide companion frequency below 2.3% at the 95% confidence level within the sensitivity limits of the survey. Preliminary modeling efforts indicate that we could have detected 85% of companions more massive than 0.05M⊙0.05 M_{\odot} and 50% above 0.03M⊙0.03 M_{\odot}.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables: accepted to the Astronomical Journa
